The Magic Within queen and slIm:spoiler alert
If you saw Queen and Slim, I’m sure you experienced all the emotions throughout the movie as much as I did and everyone else in the world
First of all, I want to say that that movie deserves 10 stars!!! Get out was really good, US was aiight but this one right here?! Off the chain!! It was definitely FOR THE CULTURE!
The ending really had me messed up in the head, not going to lie. I couldn’t sleep that night because the ending was so powerful, yet heartbreaking.
Queen and Slim really exemplified the reality that is upon us. There are some black people and even white people who will support us and give us their loyalty and respect, BUT there’s always a black sheep in the crowd, and someone is always out trollin against us.
The sex scene was very emotional, I felt like I was in the car with them! My aunt said the scene was a little too much but I think it was just enough because it showed the extremes of two different scenarios in the world. On one side of the world, someone could be having passionate sex, and on the other, someone could be getting shot. One side, a mother is giving birth, the other side, a mother is burrying her child. Anything can happen anywhere in the world, and we just have to be conscientious of this.
The fact that they knew each other for a whole 6 days and loved one another at the end speaks volumes! It shows that you don’t have to know someone for months and years to decide that you finally love them, as long as the connection is there, so will love be.
One thing that stuck out to me is that they didn’t have their phones, so there was no way to distract them from getting to know eachother. How many times have you missed out on genuinely connecting with a good person because you were entertaining someone else? Granted they were on the run and their goal collectively was to stay alive, so it bought them closer and they built an unbreakable connection and that’s hard to find, especially in the black community. That’s why we always get excited about “black love” it’s magical but rare to find.
Ladies, how many of you felt every word she said for what she wanted in a man? Sis said:
“I want him to show me scars I never knew I had. But I don’t want him to make them go away. I want him to hold my hand while I nurse them myself. And I want him to cherish the bruises they leave behind.”
That gave me chills because I know I’m not the only who has scars. We all have scars from past relationships and we never get rid of them, we just heal from them. When we find someone to cherish those bruise as part of who we are as we heal, is something magical.
This part also affected me especially at the end when he said if he had the opportunity, he’d kiss every scar she had, (my heart melted) and ultimately when she asked if she could be his legend and he told her she was already. That made me tear because how often do we meet a guy who will profess that??
Let’s not forget the hurt we witnessed when she was shot. You could tell he really loved her and I look forward to having a love like that. He carried her with pride because he knew he no longer needed to live without her. They died for eachother and for the social injustice we as black people experience daily. Their love and respect for eachother was profound!
The ending gave me a pain that I haven’t had since I lost my sister. I felt a connection with them, and they gave me faith that there are some good people in the world who will support and respect you even if they don’t like you. Like the car mechanic guy, he didn’t like them and what they were doing but he respected them! The hood rat at the end didnt respect them and turned on them for money.
There are some black people in this world who will turn on other black people for money, or even clout. Even the white woman who wanted to turn them in so they could pay off their house refused to turn them in, despite the fact that she didn’t like them. We don’t stick together as we should and that’s our problem. Crazy thing is the guy who turned on them even stated the problem saying that he’s paranoid by getting killed by police or “niggas” and he was one of them!!!!! The reason it gave me a pain like the feeling I had when my sister was killed was because her life was taken away by one of our people for money (which was only $1,000). Some black people respect money more than we respect each other’s lives and that’s horrifying.
This movie really made an impact for us and sadly, Queen and Slim were fooled at the end by one of our own. Let’s also not forget the fact that the police officer risked his job to let them free! And this clown risked their life for money! Money is the root of evil ladies and gentleman, be aware of your surroundings! We not only have to watch our backs from dirty cops but also dirty black people who claim to have their best interest for us.
Also, they pointed out that where they lived, the death penalty was enforced. Therefore, you know that if they were arrested, they’d be up for the death penalty. He would have rather died proudly holding her than die in prison, miserably, and this was a breathtaking moment (talk about ride or die). Ladies, if you’re in a relationship with someone, or even in a marriage, ask yourself if you think he’d be willing to do such a brave act. If he does, then you need to stick with him because you know he loves you, but if not, you may need to re-evaluate things. I want that same energy in my next relationship and if I can’t get that, I don’t want it, period Pooh!
Lastly, one very important detail in the movie is that Queen was killed by a white woman. You see, a black women killed by a white woman, this takes away the idea of women empowerment. Women empowerment is meant for a sisterhood of ALL WOMEN, but not in this movie. According to Oprah Mag article on the movie, “To put it simply, a woman shooting a fellow female served as an example of the betrayal of sisterhood and unity that puts so many people in our culture in harm's way.”
This scene as well as the idea that they were sold out by a member of the black community shows that not only we have to stick together as black people, but especially as women. We need to be united in all aspects.
All in all, this was a great movie and I plan to watch it again.
